Malware Infections Rampant

I’ve seen a lot of malware infections recently and thought I might post some information on how to avoid them in the future and hopefully make your internet surfing a lot safer.

What is malware?  Malicious software that states it will help you (and in some cases does), however it also installs a lot of other software that pop-up sales adds or it asks you to pay money before it does what it’s supposed to do.  They also install addware which tracks your internet / shopping and gives the information to companies that purchase it.  Usually, these malwares will trick you into bypassing your existing Virus and MalWare protections.

I thought about identifying a few of the more prolific malwares that are out today, however it doesn’t really matter what they are, it’s what they do that you have to learn to identify so that you will be prepared to protect yourself against new and existing threats.

The most important thing you can do when installing new software is READ THE WHOLE WINDOW, especially anything with a checkbox next to it.  Quite often, you will inadvertently install a toolbar or search extension which will pop up adds for other malware and add-ware.  If you do accidently install a toolbar, quickly uninstall it before it has a chance to install other software.

When you are surfing the internet or on Facebook or other social networks and a prompt comes up all of the sudden telling you either you have a lot of infections or errors with your computer and you need to click Yes or Clean Now to fix them. STOP, think for a second, did you start a virus scan or registry scan?  If you were not expecting to find errors or viruses, then you will NOT get a prompt.  The one you are looking at is a trick, if you answer it, you are allowing it to install malware or even viruses onto your computer and it will completely bypass any of your protections.  Do not even answer with a No or Cancel, simply click the Red X(top right corner) to close the window, or if you can’t find it, logoff or shutdown your computer and restart.

I hope this information helps some of you in the future, and is easy to understand.  If you don’t understand some of it, feel free to ask any questions on our forums and I’ll answer to the best of my abilities.
